Research Program

Our division advances the frontier of nuclear physics by developing and executing groundbreaking experiments to explore exotic nuclei and nuclear dynamics. Capitalizing on the world-unique capabilities of installations at GSI and FAIR - specifically, relativistic fully-stripped heavy ions up to 238U paired with advanced detection systems, we perform complete kinematic reconstruction and full particle identification, overcoming many limitations of conventional experiments.

Central to our work is the the R3B experiment. Having worked on developing, testing, and validating the R3B setup in Cave C at GSI, we use tools such as electromagnetic excitation, quasi-free scattering, single-nucleon knockout and fission to probe fundamental properties of nuclear matter. Our work directly addresses core questions in nuclear structure such as nuclear matter compressibility, symmetry energy, and short- and long-range nucleon correlations in nuclei with extreme neutron-to-proton ratios while providing crucial input for astrophysical nucleosynthesis and high-energy collision dynamics.

As we transition to the dedicated High-Energy Cave (HEC) at FAIR, our research will gain unprecedented momentum through higher beam intensities, optimized Super-FRS transmission, and a fully matured R3B detector setup. Integrated within the global R3B collaboration, we actively partner with over 50 institutions worldwide to drive the next generation of discovery science.
