General Program Advisory Committee (G-PAC)
The General PAC is the international program advisory committee of GSI with external members. The General PAC gives advice to the GSI Directorate on selecting experiment proposals that are submitted by individual users or user groups in the areas of nuclear and atomic physics. Following periodic calls for proposals, the General PAC meets to evaluate those experiment proposals on the basis of scientific merit and technical feasibility and with regard to the GSI strategy, and makes recommendations on the amount of beam time to be allotted by the directorate. The G-PAC also acts as umbrella for the different sub-PACs of GSI for various research fields.
Call for Beamtime Proposals
A 'Call for Experiment Proposals for Beamtime in 2018/2019', in FAIR-Phase-0, is open. In particular, it will exploit the beam conditions of the accelerator facilities of GSI, which have been upgraded to serve as FAIR injector. FAIR-Phase-0 will also allow the use of detectors, which have been developed for FAIR, plus the new FAIR CRYRING storage ring.
Since during this period also major construction work for FAIR is going on, operation will be limited to approximately 3 months per year. The present ‘Call for Proposals’ offers approx. 600 shifts of beamtime at UNILAC, 400 shifts at SIS18 and 170 shifts at ESR & Cryring (additional running of Cryring stand-alone is envisioned) for experiments. While the beamtime of this call is for two years (2018/2019) a smaller fraction of the 2019-beamtime will be allocated in a next call in 2018.
For experiments with the PHELIX laser, approx. 170 laser shifts are available in the period between May 2018 and April 2019.
The 'Call' ends on May 31, 2017.

Info on Proposal-Structure
Please note that a proposal consists of three parts: A) the online questionnaire, B) the proposal text itself and C) a safety form.
A) Online Questionnaire: Please complete the online webform incl. uploading the proposal itself and the supplement from on safety aspects, and submit it.
B) The Proposal should be structured and contain the following information:
Cover Sheet (1 page): Title, Spokesperson (name, E-mail address, mailing address), GSI Contact Person, Requested Beam Facility and Target Station, Energy, Flux and Ion Species, Main experimental/Scientific goal(s) (max. 4-5 lines), indication whether Continuation of a previous proposal (give experiment number), and Number of Shifts Requested (main or parasitic);
Proposal Text (max. 9 pages): Title, Spokesperson, Participants; Abstract;
Scientific Context and Motivation (state-of-the-art), Previous experiments and Background (incl. theory);
Objectives and Expected Results; Experimental Methods, New Approach in this proposal; Set-up, Technical Requirements, Justification of beamtime request; For a continuation request, a brief status report of the previous as well as an outline of the future experiment should be given.
3 major publications of the spokesperson, References;
C) Supplement Form for Safety Aspects: The safety form has to be submitted together with the proposal for beamtime. It can be downloaded from the webpage of the online webform.
Technical Information on Ion Facilities
Please calculate your beamtime request according to the nominal intensities given in this table for some ion species as examples, as they can be expected 'on-target' for the experiments. If you need further details, please contact your GSI contact person.
- UNILAC: Operation above 8.6 MeV/u only with max. rate of 10 Hz and pulse length of 1ms.
- ESR/CRYRING: Restricted performance depending on commissioning status.

In the G-PAC Meeting, proposals will be presented to the G-PAC (or respective sub-Program Advisory Committees of the respective research field, PACs) in short oral presentations of the spokespersons / research field representatives.
