HITRIplus

Heavy Ion Therapy Research Integration plus.

HITRIplus

HITRIplus is a European initiative that brings together research, industry, and clinics to advance heavy-ion therapy—a radiation therapy for cancer. The project combines biophysical and medical research and collaboratively develops sophisticated instruments.

Heavy ion therapy offers advantages over conventional radiation therapy, including more precise dose deposition and greater effectiveness against radiation-resistant tumors. However, high costs and limited evidence have hindered its widespread use.

HITRIplus overcomes these hurdles by strengthening collaboration among European institutions, industry, and research laboratories, accelerating research on heavy-ion therapy, improving accessibility, and thereby improving long-term treatment outcomes for patients.

Motivation

The fight against cancer remains a top priority, and HITRIplus addresses the need for innovative treatment options. Heavy ion therapy offers advantages over traditional radiation therapy, including improved dose accuracy and effectiveness against radiation-resistant tumors. Despite these advantages, limited data and high treatment costs have hindered its widespread use. HITRIplus aims to overcome these barriers by promoting collaboration between European institutions, industries, and research laboratories to advance heavy ion therapy research, improve accessibility, and ultimately improve treatment outcomes for patients.

Our Role in the HITRIplus Project
