Open Research Infrastructure for Energy-Efficient High-Performance Computing
GSI/FAIR

The Digital Open Lab at the "Green IT Cube" high-performance computing center is an open research infrastructure for the development, testing, and scaling of products related to energy-efficient high-performance computing.
Computing, storage, and monitoring systems can be optimally tailored to the data center’s efficient cooling system, taking into account the respective application-specific requirements for performance, temporal load distributions, etc., and across various operating modes and system configurations.
Our range of services for private and public partners within the framework of collaborative projects
- Joint research and development – utilising the infrastructure and IT expertise of GSI and FAIR for joint projects relating to
- HPC, big data and ultra-fast data acquisition; including software development and products,
- data centre infrastructure, e.g. monitoring, maintenance, sensor technology and energy optimisation.
- Provision of rack space for CPU/GPU servers and data storage.
Our topics
- HPC on CPU/GPU (AI, cyber security)
- Monitoring (energy efficiency, quality management)
- Waste heat recovery
- Wind tunnel (optimising the energy efficiency of IT and cooling systems under realistic conditions)

The Digital Open Lab is funded by the European Regional Development Fund. It is available to partners from industry and research. For inquiries and further information, please contact us.
Sustainable high-performance computing in the Green IT Cube
The Green IT Cube is particularly sustainable thanks to its specialized cooling system. The water cooling system used here, located in the rear doors of the server cabinets, is highly efficient and consumes less than seven percent of the IT equipment’s total power consumption. The energy required for cooling is reduced to one-tenth of that needed by conventional supercomputers. This helps lower operating costs while also contributing to environmental protection. Further information on the Green IT Cube high-performance data center can be found here.
