19th SPARC Topical Workshop

19th SPARC Topical Workshop
6th – 9h, Sept. 2022 on the Campus of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena

Quelle: HI Jena
This years Topical Workshop of the international SPARC collaboration was organized as hybrid meeting  with around 45 participants in person and 75 on-line on the zoom platform. The focus was on the results from the experimental campaigns in 2021/22  at the GSI/FAIR storage rings ESR and CRYRING@ESR and the proposals for the recent GPAC meeting in end Sept. 22. The overall scientific program of the workshop covered the following topics:

  • Atomic Collisions with Highly Charged Ions
  • Critical and Super-Critical Fields
  • Attosecond Science in the Realm of Extreme Fields
  • Fundamental constants

  • Cross-link between Atomic and Nuclear Physics
  • Astrophysics with Highly Charged Ions
  • Novel Instrumentation
  • Future Beam times and related SPARC strategy

About 120  participants from 13 countries (China, France, Germany, Greece, India, Japan, Poland, Portugal, Rumania, Sweden, UK, USA) enjoyed 29 talks and two poster sessions with 55 contributions in the 4-day workshop.
Besides the recent advances in the experimental programme of SPARC at the FAIR storage rings as well as the construction of the SPARC experiments, a focus was on the research at the trapping facility HITRAP and its ongoing commisioning. Last but not least, also a substantial progress in theory has been reported in particular by the colleagues from U. Lisbon, Ukraine, TU Braunschweig, and HI Jena.

PhD Award to Sebastian Klammes (right) presented by the head of the prize committee Andrey Surzhykov (left).

This year's PhD Award of the SPARC collaboration was conveyed to Sebastian Klammes for his thesis with the title „Application of pulsed UV laser systems for cooling of high-relativistic ion beams and laser spectroscopy of Be-like krypton ions”. Its topic is ion beam cooling at particle accelerator facilities, which is one of the indispensable techniques for the production of high-quality ion beams with narrow velocity distributions. A pilot facility for laser cooling of high-energy and intense ion beams is also under development for the SIS100 ring accelerator at the FAIR international accelerator facility, which is currently being built at GSI.

Last but not least we acknowledge the support and help of Janett Flegel and Christoph Hahn, and the students from HI Jena. A special thank to them!
