IT Service: Linux Pool Machines (lxlogin, lxpool, Virgo, Lustre)

Quick guide

GSI/FAIR provides diverse possibilites to access resources in the area of Linux and scientific Computation to every person with a Linux account. This page describes the available machine pools. Access is possible either through the shell (SSH) or graphically (X2Go) (see Remote Access to Linux Machines). The services, which can be reached (e.g. compute cluster/Virgo and distributed high-performance storage/Lustre) have their own preconditions and manuals.

Service description

Firstly the provided ressources facilitate teleworking. Our machines are subject to an uniform standard which allows to work efficientlly on every device. Our pool lx-pool.gsi.de is accessible from the internet and thus suitable for mobile working, e.g. in home office.

Secondly access to protected ressource is only available on certain machines, e.g. Lustre. Therefore access is provided through pool machines (see table below).

The GSI IT department provides a number of interactive Linux computers that can be used to login using SSH. These machines are organized into pools. If you login to a pool you will automatically be forwarded to an available machine.

Users can access their home directories (/u) on all interactive machines, as well as central file systems like /d (data storage), /SAT/s (global scratch space) or /WWW (web-docs).

The following pools are available. Use the alias to connect, e.g. ssh account@lx-pool.gsi.de (for usage information on ssh see remote access).

Pool Platform Internet Access Accessibility Kerberos Filesystems Batchfarm Submitter Software
files.hpc.gsi.de See Virgo documentation
lxlogin.gsi.de Debian 11 limited Internet minimal
lx-pool.gsi.de Debian 10 limited Internet CVMFS, NFS complete
lustre.hpc.gsi.de Debian 11, Rocky Linux 8 via proxy only GSI network Lustre, CVMFS, NFS basic

When you connect to a server for the first time, ssh asks you to verify that it connected to the right machine. Please compare the presented fingerprint with the corresponding one from the list below, before accepting the connection.

» ssh account@lx-pool.gsi.de
The authenticity of host 'lx-pool.gsi.de (x.x.x.x)' can't be established.
RSA key fingerprint is b7:77:89:3d:96:d8:05:a3:6d:4b:17:5e:ed:81:1a:3e.
Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)?
# Answer yes only if the fingerprint is identical to the MD5 fingerprint
# of the host's RSA key in table below.
