Application Procedure for PHELIX Beamtime

Proposals for beamtime with PHELIX laser and/or ion beam are evaluated by the PHELIX and Plasmaphysics Program Advisory Committee (PPAC), consisting of external members. For more details on the composition of the committee see the website PPAC.

Applications for beamtime: For the application an experiment proposal has to be submitted through the  General Access Tool to the Experimental facilities of GSI (GATE): This is a web-based platform for the processes starting from user registration, proposal editing and submission up to beamtime allocation. It unites all steps in one system, adding transparency and flexibility while being less prone to errors.

The process of proposal submission can be interrupted and resumed any time. A short manual on the submission of beamtime proposals and the process with granted experiments can be found here.

Instructions on the content and structure of the uploaded proposed experiment are given here: Proposal-Structure.

Important: In GATE all participants of a proposal (Co-Proposer) and persons coming on-site for the execution of the experiment (Experimentalists) need to be registered in GATE. To be included by the Proposer, their permission to be found in GATE by other users' searches is required.

Questions can be addressed to GATE-Help.

Applications from Institutes of EU-Member States: Additionally to the above described procedure applications from institutes in EU countries for PHELIX beamtime can apply for funding through Laserlab Europe.

Performance of PHELIX

PHELIX is available for experiments in the PHELIX hall and at the Z6 target station of the UNILAC heavy-ion accelerator, where pulses of laser beam can be delivered, synchronized with heavy-ion pulses.

For more information on PHELIX performance please consult the GSI webpage PHELIX.
