Staff Unit Diversity, Inclusion and Culture (DIV)

The diversity of people and their perspectives is a resource and a strength; their inclusion is both a commitment and a matter of course at the GSI Helmholtz Center.

The guiding principle of diversity is the appreciation of the diversity among employees. In this context, commonalities and differences - such as gender, age, migration background, religion, disability, sexual identity, culture, and education - are described.

Diversity management means harnessing this diversity in a productive and value-adding way. Through different perspectives, diverse needs and contexts can be better taken into account in a research institution like GSI. In doing so, employees must be viewed holistically, and diversity must be enabled and promoted. At the same time, the goal is to identify areas for action to improve work life. Here, employees should find a place that reflects their diverse and shared needs.

Different experiences, life stages, or life situations are a driving force for creative ideas and concepts - and thus for innovation.

The goal is a culture that values and promotes diversity at all levels

Achieving this goal is not a short-term project, but rather a long-term and sustainable change in the culture of a research institution. The implementation of diversity consists of four core elements:

  • Embedding the topic of diversity in the research institution’s strategy as the foundation for a shared, appreciative understanding of diversity,
  • diversity as an integral part of, for example, strategic discussions on human resources at the management level,
  • Integrating diversity into all strategic topics,
  • By identifying specific challenges (e.g., through an employee survey), concrete measures can then be derived.
