On November 2nd 2017 Olga Sokol received the Giersch Excellence Award 2017. This price is awarded annually for outstanding scientific contributions of PhD students of the HGS-HIRe graduate school. Olga Sokol has analyzed in her work the radiobiological properties of ion beams for therapeutic applications. In her work recently published in Physics in Medicine and Biology and discussed in the MedicalPhysicsWeb  she has demonstrated, that in particular oxygen ions are expected to be advantageous in case of hypoxic tumors, when  compared with the currently used carbon ions.

Radon therapy research to continue New project receives €4 million in funding. A multi-year research project led by the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung has been investigating the anti-inflammatory therapeutic effect, as well as the risks, of treatment with the inert gas radon. The project has now received a green light for continuing this research. A total of €4 million will be available to it in the coming four years, with €1.9 million of that amount going to the groups working at GSI.

On November 16th, 2017 Lennart Volz from German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, Dr. Johannes Petzoldt from the IBA group in Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium), as well as Dr. Kristjan Anderle from GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt received the Christoph Schmelzer Award 2017. They were honored for their excellent dissertations and master Thesis on the field of tumor therapy using ion beams.

24.10.2017

Prof. Dr. Gerhard Kraft has been nominated as Honorary President of the European Radiation Research Society (ERRS). ERRS (formerly the European Society of Radiation Biology) is a European non-profit organization founded in 1959 with the aim of promoting radiation research. Within this aim, the society organizes annual meetings and since 1996 yearly presents the Bacq and Alexander award to an outstanding European researcher to recognize the achievements of the awardee in the field of radiation research. Gerhard Kraft received this prestigious award in 2006.

Prof. Dr. Claudia Fournier has been appointed by Minister Barbara Hendricks from BMU as a member of the German Commission on Radiological Protection (“Strahlenschutzkommission”, SSK) for the period 2017-2018.

The German Commission on Radiological Protection advises the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) on issues concerning the protection from the risks of ionising and non-ionising radiation.

Membership in the SSK is an honorary personal office. The members are appointed by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety. They are independent and not bound by directive. As a result of its advisory activity, SSK decides on statements and recommendations. Results adopted by majority vote are published by the competent Federal Ministry and on this website. https://www.ssk.de/DE/Home/home_node.html

Ion treatments for cardiac arrhythmia

Accelerated particles as a non-invasive alternative to catheter-based surgery

At the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research was developed and tested a new method for a future treatment of cardiac arrhythmia. The research was carried by a team of biophysicists from GSI and physicians from Heidelberg University and the Mayo Clinic in the United States.  Beams of carbon ions are already used successfully to treat tumors and could represent a non-invasive alternative to the present treatment with cardiac catheters or drugs.
