Science Year 2023 – Our Universe

During Science Year 2023 – Our Universe, initiated by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, researchers, policy-makers and civil society will be looking into outer space from a wide variety of perspectives ... and back again to planet Earth. GSI and FAIR are involved in the Science Year with events and activities:

Lecture series "Wissenschaft für Alle"

"Wissenschaft für Alle" is a public lecture series organized by FAIR and GSI and is aimed at anyone interested in current science and research. The lectures take place as hybrid events both on-site on campus and via video conference.

The topics cover a wide scientific spectrum — not only research at GSI and FAIR is reported on, but also current topics in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine and computer science in general. The aim of the series is to present scientific processes in a way that they are understandable to people without specialist knowledge.

Masterclasses

Interested students can experience a day of research on particle physics or ion beam therapy during the Masterclass events. The events are part of the International Masterclasses for High School Students, a worldwide program with around 225 participating universities and research institutions in more than 60 countries.

Dates and registration

International Summer Student Program

During the summer months of 2023 GSI and its graduate school HGS-HIRe organize an International Summer Student Program (ISSP) which is offered to students on the advanced undergraduate and Master level with at least three years of study completed upcoming summer, i.e. students during their last-year Bachelor or Master studies in physics or related natural science and engineering disciplines from Europe or GSI/FAIR partner countries.

ESA-FAIR Summer School

The ESA-FAIR Radiation Summer School was established to inform students about the fundamentals of the biophysics of heavy ions for terrestrial and space applications. It will contribute to research and development in the field of biomedical and biophysical applications of heavy ions in Europe and will highlight ESA’s commitment to stimulate the pursuit of education in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines as well as to foster interest and generate expertise relevant to Human Spaceflight activities.
