The Christoph Schmelzer Award 2012 ceremony to Kathrin Frey from Heidelberg University, Sebastian Hild from FH Gießen Friedberg and Christopher Kurz from Heidelberg University will take place on January 17, 2013 at 16:00 Uhr in GSI Lecture Hall (SB1 1.200). Program
Professorship for Corinna Kausch-Blecken Von Schmeling at the Temple University in USA
Dr. Corinna Kausch-Blecken Von Schmeling has been appointed Adjunct Professor of Science Management by the Dean of the College of Science and Technology at Temple University, Philadelphia, USA. Dr. Kausch has a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Hamburg and works since more than 10 years at GSI. She graduated at the Helmholtz Academy of the Malik Management Center in 2011, and is currently Deputy Director of the Biophysics Department. Dr. Kausch professorship in the prestigious US University lasts until July 2013 and is renewable.
The Nuclear Physics European Collaboration Committee (NuPECC), an Expert Committee of the European Science Foundation (ESF), is planning to produce a booklet on "Nuclear Physics in Medicine".
The document will serve to inform the scientific community (beyond the nuclear-physics community), the funding agencies and policy makers, as well as the politicians.
Three different chapters have been identified for the paper: hadrontherapy, imaging and medical radioisotopes.
Prof. Marco Durante (GSI) and Prof. Sydney Gales (IN2P3, France) are the conveners for the hadrontherapy chapters, which will be presented to the NuPECC general assembly in October 2013.
A special course in "Introduction to statistical analysis for experimenters" will be held by Prof. Marco Durante in November. Lectures will be very informal, and students are welcome to propose topics and problems. A tentative calendar is:
Monday 19, 10:30-12:30 - Metrology
Tuesday 20, 9:30-11:30 - Theory of probability
Wednesday 21, 9:30-11:30 - Descriptive statistics
Thursday 22, 9:30-11:30 - Inference statistics
Friday 23, 13:30-15:30 - Correlation and regression
The course is open to everybody, especially to undergraduate and graduate students in biology.
Nicole Averbeck received the Poster Award at the Annual Meeting of the European Radiation Research Society 2012, Vietri sul Mare.
