STS Group

The STS group at GSI has a leading role in the development and construction of the high-performance Silicon Tracking System for the CBM experiment. We comprise of physicists, engineers and technical staff from GSI’s CBM and Detector Laboratory departments, as well as doctoral students and trainees from CBM Collaboration groups and FAIR guest programs. We carry out work in the following scientific-technical research areas, using state-of-the art laboratory, workshop and computing infrastructure:

  • detector performance simulations;
  • development and mass qualification of silicon microstrip sensors,  front-end and power electronics;
  • prototype detector tests in beam and related data analyses;
  • detector module and ladder series assembly and qualification;
  • engineering and construction of the full detector system,  integrating  ladders with mechanics, cabling, powering, cooling and controls;
  • commissioning of the detector system in the assembly laboratory and finally in the CBM experiment.
