Our Mission
The Joint Outreach Office (JOO) was established as a common outreach structure of FAIR/GSI and ErUM-FSPs@FAIR, the four research projects participating in FAIR funded by the German Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space. Its main objective is to professionalize and strategically develop public outreach, science communication, education, and transfer activities related to FAIR science.
The JOO is supported by two complementary positions. The Educational Scientific Outreach Officer at FAIR/GSI, currently Dr. Moritz Kriegel, focuses on the didactic preparation of FAIR science for schools, universities, and public learning environments. This includes the development of sustainable educational concepts, teaching and learning materials, school and university formats, and pedagogical outreach activities at GSI/FAIR sites. The ErUM-FSP@FAIR Outreach Officer, currently Dr. Robin Dexheimer-Reuter, strengthens the connection between the FAIR research pillars and the German university groups participating in the ErUM-FSPs. This position supports FSP-specific outreach activities, the communication of scientific results, the coordination of established and new formats, and the coherent presentation of the four FAIR research pillars.
For the funding period 2027–2030, the JOO will further consolidate and expand its role as the central outreach and communication interface for the ErUM-FSPs and FAIR/GSI. It will support the ErUM-FSPs APPA, CBM, PANDA and NUSTAR by making current scientific results, experiment-specific developments, and the broader research context of FAIR visible to different audiences. Emphasis will be placed on the didactic preparation of the physics of cosmic matter in the laboratory and the formation of material and the evolution of life from elementary matter. It will be realized by the development of STEM formats for pupils and students, the support of Masterclasses and other outreach activities, the improvement of web visibility, and the communication of selected scientific highlights. At the same time, the JOO will strengthen the visibility of the university groups within the FAIR program.
