Clinical facility in Heidelberg

The experience gained in the pilot project directly benefited the construction of the Heidelberg Ion-Beam Radiotherapy Center (HIT). GSI has developed an accelerator that is tailored to the requirements of this project for the routine application of ion-beam radiotherapy. The cost of the 119 million Euro investment were shared equally by the Heidelberg University Medical Center and the German federal government.

Patients can be treated in clinical routine operation at the facility opened in 2009. The treatment cost per patient will amount to about 20,000 Euro. That is double or triple the treatment cost for conventional radiation-beam radiotherapy. But this new therapeutic modality can benefit even patients for whom no effective treatment has been available in the past. In the long term this holds the promise of reducing the burden on payers in the healthcare system.
