This year's SPARC collaboration PhD Prize was awarded to Dr. Guy Leckenby from University of British Columbia, Canada, for his thesis entitled “Exotic Decay Measurements at the Experimental Storage Ring for Neutron Capture Processes”. The ceremony took place in the framework of the 22nd SPARC Topical Workshop at the University of Ioannina, Greece, where the award was handed over by Prof. Reinhold Schuch from the University of Stockholm and the spokesperson of the SPARC collaboration.

GSI/FAIR scientist Privatdozent Dr. Michael Scholz received the Ulrich Hagen Prize for his contributions to radiation research at this year's annual conference of the German Society for Biological Radiation Research (DeGBS) in Munich. The prize is awarded for outstanding achievements in German radiation research – typically for lifetime achievement.

With exciting insights into the world of research and many interactive activities, the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung and the emerging international accelerator facility FAIR captivated visitors to the Open House at the Hessian State Representation in Berlin. On October 3, the Representation, together with numerous Hessian institutions, offered a varied program that attracted around 14,000 guests.
Every year on Tag der Deutschen Einheit, the state representations open their doors…

GSI/FAIR is collaborating with ABB to improve the energy efficiency of its scientific infrastructure. Formally launched last week on site in Darmstadt, Germany, the collaboration project with ABB focuses on the highly advanced technical infrastructure within the existing and operational GSI accelerator complex.

The Japanese Kimura Award goes to Dr. Matthias Schädel, the former head of the research department for nuclear chemistry at GSI/FAIR, for his “outstanding and pioneering contributions to the advancement of radiochemistry.” Schädel is the first non-Japanese recipient of this honor. The award was presented at the APSORC 2025 (Asian-Pacific Symposium on Radiochemistry) held in Matsue, Japan, in September, in conjunction with a lecture by the award winner.

In the anniversary year Quantum2025, the German Physical Society (DPG) has honored GSI/FAIR in Darmstadt as one of the new quantum locations. This gives GSI/FAIR, one of the leading research sites for particle and accelerator physics, official recognition in the field of quantum science and technology.

It is a great success for science communication and demonstrates how fascinating cutting-edge research can be: Around 7,000 visitors since its opening in spring, 40 school classes, twelve workshop days—this is the balance sheet of the SCIENCE POP-UP project, realized in Darmstadt’s city by the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung and the international accelerator center FAIR, currently under construction. Opened in March this year and originally planned to run through the summer months,…
