Early Stage Researcher in the "Medical Physics Group" (all genders)

GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. Currently, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) one of the world's largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work together in this international environment with a team of employees committed to ensure each day to conduct world-class science.

The Biophysics department is an interdisciplinary collaboration of biologists, physicists, chemists, biochemists and technicians. The multidisciplinary research in our group covers a wide range of topics from radiobiology, radiation physics and space research to radiation therapy.

The Medical Physics Group within the Biophysics department deals with advanced treatment planning and delivery research for ion beam therapy. In particular, the group investigates precision therapy for mobile tumors in organs of the thorax and abdomen, but also for non-cancer diseases such as cardiac arrhythmia. The developed strategies are experimentally validated in Cave M and in collaboration with clinical partners. More details can be found on the group website:

starting from 1st of June 2024 or soon thereafter.

Within the ERC consolidator grant PROMISE, a novel image-guidance strategy for ion beam therapy will be developed. In a mixed ion beam, carbon ions will deliver the therapeutic dose, while simultaneously helium ions pass through the target and can be used to monitor the treatment beam.

We are looking for an excellent, dedicated person with a Master degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering or comparable. Experience in the field of Medical Physics, Particle Physics, Particle Imaging or Detector Design is advantageous, as well as experience in Monte Carlo simulations of ion beams. The specific tasks include:

  • Development of a system to detect Helium beam range over the Carbon fragment background
  • Characterization of the mixed Helium-Carbon ion beam
  • Planning and execution of experimental campaigns to validate scientific results
  • Publication and presentation of the results in manuscripts and on conferences.

Our offer:

Working in an innovative, interdisciplinary and excellently equipped research group that is world leading in several fields of research.
