Accelerator Physicist (all genders)

Posting - ID.: 24.49-6330

Within the ERC Consolidator project PROMISE you will work on developing and testing of methods to produce mixed ion beams for cancer therapy. As the characteristics of such a beam are mostly determined by beam dynamics in the synchrotron, this position is part of the Department „System Design SIS100/SIS18“, where you will be working in close contact with colleagues responsible for development and modeling of the SIS18. You will also be in close contact with other accelerator departments and the Biophysics department.

Your tasks:

  • You will develop concepts for the cost-efficient production of mixed ion beams in therapy facilities, ranging from producing ions in the source to pre-acceleration in a linear accelerator to slow extraction from the synchrotron
  • You will develop methods for the production of mixed ion beams in the synchrotron SIS18, exploiting the wide array of options available in the GSI accelerator complex. You will coordinate the necessary additions in the accelerator control system and test your developments in machine experiments
  • You will conduct simulations of beam dynamics of the production of mixed ion beams, especially concerning the injection, acceleration and slow extraction in the SIS18
  • You will publish your results in scientific journals and present them at conferences.

Your profile:

  • You have a Ph.D. in Physics or a comparable discipline
  • You have solid experience in the field of accelerator physics
  • You have experience in operating and simulating accelerators, ideally ring accelerators
  • Ideally, you have programming experience in Python, Java, or C++
  • You have strong communication and organization skills with colleagues of different disciplines
  • You have a structured, goal-oriented and constructive work ethic
  • You speak English and ideally, German, and you are able to compose technical and scientific reports in both languages.

We offer a versatile and challenging project as part of an experienced team in our internationally renowned research institute. More information on GSI and FAIR you will find at www.gsi.de and www.fair-center.eu.

The position has a fixed term of 3 years. Salary is equivalent to that for public employees as specified in the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund).
