Memorial Colloquium for Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Hans Geissel (1950–2024)
On 25 November, a scientific colloquium was held in memory of Hans Geissel, who passed away at the end of April 2024. In their contributions, Thomas Nilsson, Scientific Managing Director of GSI and FAIR, Alex C. Mueller (ACM Consult, Mainz, Germany), and Michael Thoennessen (FRIB and MSU, USA) paid tribute to Hans Geissel’s personality and his scientific achievements throughout four decades of research. They highlighted his outstanding contributions to the study and application of exotic nuclei, his internationally recognized impact on the advancement of the field, his pioneering work on the development of fragment separators at research facilities worldwide, as well as his commitment to teaching and the education of young scientists. At the end of the event, which was also attended by members of his family, former colleagues - both from the local community and the international scientific environment - shared appreciative personal recollections and honored Hans Geissel by reflecting on their many experiences with him.
Gedenk-Kolloquium für Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Hans Geissel (1950 - 2024)
Am 25. November wurde mit einem Wissenschaftlichen Kolloquium des Ende April 2024 verstorbenen Hans Geissel gedacht. In ihren Beiträgen würdigten Thomas Nilsson, Wissenschaftlicher Geschäftsführer von GSI und FAIR, Alex C. Mueller (ACM Consult, Mainz) und Michael Thoennessen (FRIB und MSU, USA) die Persönlichkeit und das wissenschaftliche Wirken von Hans Geissel in vier Jahrzehnten Forscherleben. Dabei betonten sie seine herausragenden Leistungen bei Erforschung und Anwendung exotischer Kerne, seinen international anerkannten Einfluss auf den Fortschritt des Fachgebiets, seine bahnbrechenden Arbeiten zur Entwicklung von Fragmentseparatoren an Forschungsanlagen weltweit, sowie seine Aktivitäten in der Lehre und zur Ausbildung junger Nachwuchswissenschaftler. Am Ende der Veranstaltung, zu der auch die Familie von Hans Geissel gekommen war, erinnerten sich ehemalige Kolleginnen und Kollegen, sowohl aus dem lokalen wie aus dem internationalen Umfeld, in wertschätzenden Worten an gemeinsame Erlebnisse und würdigten Hans Geissel mit vielen persönlichen Erinnerungen.

Colloquium on the Occasion of Prof. Dr. Thomas Nilsson’s 60th Birthday
On the occasion of Thomas Nilsson’s 60th birthday, a special celebratory colloquium took place at GSI/FAIR on October 28, 2025. The audience was welcomed by Prof. Dr. Carlo Ewerz, who emphasized Thomas Nilsson’s long-standing connection with GSI/FAIR and the scientific community.
The tribute lecture was given by Björn Jonson from Chalmers University of Technology. Under the title “Thomas Nilsson 60 or From Åmål to Wixhausen”, Jonson—Thomas Nilsson’s doctoral advisor—looked back on almost four decades of friendship and scientific collaboration.
He recalled a statement by Thomas Nilsson, who once, when asked why physics—from the smallest scales to large research infrastructures—fascinated him so much, replied: “that it is because they both require collaboration with other people"”
Jonson used this remark as a guiding thread to highlight Nilsson’s remarkable ability to bring people together and to shape science through exchange and cooperation.
Following the colloquium, a joint dinner was held in the GSI/FAIR canteen, where colleagues and guests had the opportunity to offer personal congratulations and bring the evening to a festive close.

Anlässlich des 60. Geburtstags von Thomas Nilsson fand am 28. Oktober 2025 ein besonderes Festkolloquium bei GSI/FAIR statt. Begrüßt wurde das Publikum von Prof. Dr. Carlo Ewerz, der die langjährige Verbundenheit von Thomas Nilssons mit GSI/FAIR und der Community hervorhob.
Der Festvortrag wurde von Björn Jonson von der Chalmers University of Technology gehalten. Unter dem Titel „Thomas Nilsson 60 or From Åmål to Wixhausen“ blickte Jonson, Doktorvater von Thomas Nilsson, auf fast vier Jahrzehnte gemeinsamer Freundschaft und wissenschaftlicher Zusammenarbeit zurück.
Er erinnerte dabei an eine Aussage Thomas Nilssons, der einmal auf die Frage, warum ihn Physik – von der kleinsten Skala bis zu großen Forschungsinfrastrukturen – so faszinierte, antwortete: „Weil beides Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Menschen erfordert.“
Jonson nutzte diese Aussage als roten Faden, um Nilssons besondere Fähigkeit hervorzuheben, Menschen zusammenzubringen und Wissenschaft im Austausch miteinander zu gestalten.
Im Anschluss an das Kolloquium fand ein gemeinsames Dinner in der GSI/FAIR-Kantine statt, bei dem Kolleg*innen und Gäste die Gelegenheit hatten, persönliche Glückwünsche auszusprechen und den Abend in festlicher Atmosphäre ausklingen zu lassen.
