Ion beam workshop
The Annual Workshop on Ion and Particle Beams 2025 took place from September 22 to 24 at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt, Germany. Organized by the Materials Research Department, the workshop brought together scientists from Germany and abroad who utilize positron and ion beams across a broad energy range, from eV to GeV, for applications including materials analysis and modification, as well as nanostructure fabrication.
This year’s workshop featured a comprehensive scientific agenda, highlighting ongoing projects and recent results from large-scale research infrastructures supported by the BMFTR ErUM program. The program also featured recent highlights from beamtimes conducted within the FAIR Phase-0 program. The workshop showcased a broad array of topics such as:
- Ion-track nanotechnology and catalysis
- Investigations of radiation-induced effects in materials, including semiconductors, 2D materials, and nanowires
- Experiments under extreme conditions using high pressure
- Developments in accelerator and beamline technologies
- Updates from key facilities at e.g., GSI-MAT, ISOLDE at CERN, IBC at HZDR, and the Tandem laboratory in Uppsala.
In total, participants had the opportunity to attend 26 scientific presentations and explore 15 poster contributions. A strong focus was placed on engaging early-career researchers, with many Master’s and PhD students actively participating and presenting their work.
The workshop officially started with a lunch reception on Monday and concluded at noon on Wednesday. Following the closing session, participants were invited to join a guided tour of the FAIR construction site. Throughout the event, participants engaged in lively discussions and meaningful scientific exchange, making the workshop a valuable platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing across the ion and particle beam research community.
Ionenstrahl-Workshop
Der Annual Workshop on Ion and Particle Beams 2025 fand vom 22. bis 24. September am GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt statt. Organisiert von der Abteilung Materialforschung brachte der Workshop Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler aus dem In- und Ausland zusammen, die Positronen- und Ionenstrahlen über einen breiten Energiebereich – von eV bis GeV – für Anwendungen in der Materialanalyse, -modifikation sowie der Herstellung von Nanostrukturen nutzen.
Der diesjährige Workshop bot ein umfangreiches wissenschaftliches Programm, das aktuelle Projekte sowie neueste Ergebnisse aus großen Forschungsinfrastrukturen präsentierte, die durch das BMBF-Verbundforschungsprogramm ErUM gefördert werden. Zudem wurden Highlights aus Strahlzeiten im Rahmen des FAIR Phase-0 Programms vorgestellt.
Das wissenschaftliche Programm umfasste Beiträge zu folgenden Themen:
- Ionenspur für Nanotechnologie und Katalyse
- Strahleninduzierte Effekte in Materialien, darunter Halbleiter, 2D-Materialien und Nanodrähte
- Experimente unter extremen Bedingungen wie hohem Druck
- Fortschritte in der Beschleuniger- und Strahllinientechnologie
- Neuigkeiten von zentralen Forschungseinrichtungen wie GSI-MAT, ISOLDE am CERN, dem IBC am HZDR sowie dem Tandem-Labor in Uppsala
Insgesamt wurden 26 wissenschaftliche Vorträge gehalten und 15 Posterbeiträge präsentiert. Die gezielte Einbindung von Nachwuchswissenschaftler:innen war ein zentrales Anliegen – zahlreiche Master- und Doktorand:innen präsentierten ihre Forschung und beteiligten sich aktiv am wissenschaftlichen Austausch.
