Nina Eisenhardt, a member of the Hessian State Parliament (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) recently visited GSI/FAIR to learn about current scientific activities and the construction progress of the international accelerator center FAIR. She was accompanied by Alexander Link, advisor on education and higher education for Bündnis 90/Die Grünen parliamentary group in the German Bundestag, as well as by other members of the party’s working group (BAG) on science, higher education, and technology policy.
The guests were welcomed by Dr. Katharina Stummeyer, Administrative Managing Director of GSI and FAIR; Jörg Blaurock, Technical Managing Director of GSI and FAIR; Dr. Yvonne Leifels, Head of Research at GSI and FAIR; and Dr. Ingo Peter, Head of Public Relations at GSI and FAIR.
The visit opened with a presentation on the research facility’s strategic priorities, key research topics, and future prospects. The current status following the fire and the measures implemented to ensure the continuation of research as quickly as possible—in collaboration with the scientific community—were also key topics of interest.
In addition, the politicians gained insights into the ongoing developments of the FAIR project. The latest progress on the construction site in preparation for commissioning, as well as the expansion of the technical infrastructure, was presented. Accompanied by Dr. Harald Hagelskamp, Head of the FAIR Construction Site, the guests were able to observe the work up close.
The program included the main supply building, the underground SIS100 accelerator ring tunnel, the transfer building for beam guidance and distribution, the connection from GSI to the future FAIR facility, and buildings for the FAIR CBM experimental site as well as the Super-FRS and R3B experimental areas. Afterward, a tour of the GSI/FAIR campus took the guests to several key research and infrastructure areas. They visited the new FAIR control center and the HADES detector.
“We are proud that Hesse is home to world-class international research at GSI/FAIR. I remain committed to the gradual expansion of FAIR, because this globally unique research helps mankind to better understand the universe. What particularly impressed me during this visit was the professional handling of the damage caused by the fire and the scientific ingenuity being used to safeguard the research,” said Nina Eisenhardt.
