Leopold Born, Secretary General of the CDU in Hesse, visits GSI and FAIR

The new Secretary General of the CDU in Hesse, Leopold Born, visited GSI and FAIR together with Hartwig Jourdan, a member of the state parliament of Hesse from Darmstadt, and Paul Georg Wandrey, a city council member and head of public order for the City of Darmstadt (both CDU). The visit focused on scientific activities, the progress of the FAIR project, and the repair and restoration measures following the fire.
The guests were welcomed by Professor Thomas Nilsson, the Scientific Managing Director of GSI and FAIR, who joined the event online, and Dr. Katharina Stummeyer, the Administrative Managing Director of GSI and FAIR, as well as Dr. Ingo Peter, the Head of Public Relations at GSI and FAIR. The event began with a discussion of strategic priorities, key research topics, and future prospects for the research institution. Other important topics included the current status following the fire, the measures that have been implemented, and the short- and medium-term impacts on scientific operations. The goal of these measures is to ensure the continuation of research as quickly as possible in collaboration with the scientific community.
In addition, the politicians gained insights into the ongoing developments of the FAIR project. The latest progress on the construction site in preparation for commissioning, as well as the expansion of the technical infrastructure, was presented. Accompanied by Dr. Harald Hagelskamp, the head of the FAIR construction site, the guests were able to observe the work up close. The tour included the underground SIS100 accelerator ring tunnel, the central building for beam guidance and distribution, and buildings for the FAIR CBM experimental area as well as the Super-FRS experimental facility.
