At its meeting on November 13, 2025, the GSI Supervisory Board unanimously elected Dr. Andrea Fischer as new chair. Andrea Fischer is head of the subdivision “Large-Scale Facilities and Basic Research” at the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space.

Andrea Fischer has held responsible and strategically important positions in the Ministry of Research and in committees for GSI and FAIR for many years and has extensive knowledge of corporate structures. She was head of the department in the ministry responsible for FAIR and GSI. She is also deputy chair of the FAIR Council, the highest supervisory body of FAIR’s international shareholders. FAIR is the particle accelerator center currently being built at GSI, one of the largest research projects worldwide.

“I am very thankful for the trust placed in me by the Supervisory Board and the opportunity to continue to actively shape the future of GSI and FAIR,” said Andrea Fischer. “Together with my colleagues on the Supervisory Board, the Management Board, and all employees, I would like to do my part to ensure a successful future for GSI and FAIR.”

The GSI Management Board also welcomes the decision: “With Andrea Fischer as the new chair of the Supervisory Board, we are gaining an experienced and highly respected personality who knows our company and its values,” explains Professor Thomas Nilsson, Scientific Director and Spokesperson for the Management Board of GSI. “Her extensive experience, strategic vision, and in-depth understanding of our research center make her the ideal candidate for this position.”

Andrea Fischer succeeds Volkmar Dietz, who has taken his well-deserved retirement. The Supervisory Board and the Management Board would like to thank him for his extraordinary commitment and his pioneering decisions, which have led to the successful development of GSI, also with regard to the realization of the new FAIR accelerator center. (IP)
