Technology Meets Practice: Start of Training at FAIR and GSI

02.09.2025

GSI and FAIR will welcome eight new trainees beginning their careers at a world-leading research center when training starts in 2025. Six apprentices began in August in the fields of industrial mechanics and electronics, followed by two students in a dual study program in computer science in October. They can look forward to a diverse and inspiring environment with state-of-the-art technology, exciting research projects, and practical training that will open up the best prospects for their future.

Four of the apprentices are starting their training in industrial mechanics, two in electronics, and two are completing a dual study program in computer science. From the beginning, they will gain practical experience in a work environment involving projects related to constructing the FAIR facility and the ongoing research operations at GSI. In the process, they will gain practical insights into innovative technologies and processes.

The practical training for the four prospective industrial mechanics begins with a variety of demanding tasks. They will learn to file, drill, turn, and CNC mill to manufacture high-precision components used directly in accelerator facilities and experiments. These varied activities and ever-changing tasks ensure that the training remains exciting and challenging.

Future electronics apprentices will assemble electrical devices and systems, commission them, measure voltages, and detect faults in complex circuits. Working in different departments will give the apprentices comprehensive insight into modern electronics and how they are used at the research center.

Starting in October, two students in the dual study program in computer science will join the team of trainees. They will apply the theoretical knowledge they have acquired in their studies to practical tasks on site, including those in programming, networks, and data processing. (JL)
