09.05.2025

Four politicians from Darmstadt's SPD parliamentary group - Michael Siebel, Kevin Trah-Bente, Jutta Prochaska and Ulrike Schmidbauer - recently visited GSI and FAIR's SCIENCE POP-UP in the city center of Darmstadt. They were accompanied by members of the parliamentary group. The guests were welcomed by Dr. Ingo Peter, Head of the Public Relations Department, Dr. Moritz Kriegel, Educational Outreach Officer and Anna Bening, volunteer.

During their visit, the politicians learned about the innovative SCIENCE POP-UP concept and the associated current and future educational programs offered by GSI and FAIR. The discussion focused on the promotion of young scientific talents and interests.

Since the end of March, the SCIENCE POP-UP project has been offering low-threshold access to the world of cutting-edge research in a centrally located store in Darmstadt's city center. The interactive exhibition is aimed at anyone between the ages of five and 95 and uses exhibits, films and hands-on stations to make complex physical phenomena understandable. With various workshops and a school laboratory experiment, there are also special offers for school classes and smaller interest groups.

During a short guided tour, the councilors were given an insight into the content and aims of the interactive exhibition as well as the wide range of educational activities, in particular the school laboratory, which aims to get young people interested in science. Afterwards, the councilors were able to try the interactive stations themselves. In the exhibits, they investigated how particles are accelerated, generated and observed – and with the help of virtual reality glasses, they even took a short tour of the GSI/FAIR campus. (AB/MK)
