“A summer full of laughs, physics and endless fun”: GSI/FAIR Summer Student Program 2026

34 students came from 16 countries this summer to participate in the GSI/FAIR Summer Student Program. For eight weeks, they were able to immerse themselves in the daily life at an international particle accelerator center. Our yearly photo contest offers exclusive insights into the program.
Every year students get the opportunity to participate in the GSI/FAIR Summer Student Program and gain insights into the research. „For me, GSI was an invaluable experience. I hope to see most of the people I met again — in and outside the science environment,” says Teresa Aboal Marqués from the University of Santiago de Compostela at the good-bye event.
They are assigned to a research group during their time on campus, where they are able to work on their own projects from a scientific or technical field. Every one of these projects actively contributes to the research at GSI/FAIR. The different research topics ranged from atom and biophysics to nuclear and astrophysics. The focus was on testing and developing technical and experimental components for the FAIR accelerator facility, which is currently under construction.
“I will always remember the kindness, the people and the incredible things I learned here,” says Federica Diana from the University of Naples Federico II.
For many students, the GSI/FAIR Summer Student Program is just the beginning. They often decide to write their master’s or doctoral thesis at GSI/FAIR in Darmstadt. The program took place for the 44th time this year and is organized in cooperation with the HGS-HIRe graduate school. Aside from the research, the program included a city rallye, different activities by GSI’s company sports program, as well as self-organized excursions in the region.
The GSI/FAIR Summer Student Program was complemented by several lectures that provided an overview of current research at the GSI/FAIR accelerator center as well as the scientific results. (AD)
