As part of a summer tour of the state of Hesse, organized by the Hessian State Chancellery, the crew of the frigate Hessen visited the FAIR and GSI campus. The group was welcomed by Jörg Blaurock, Technical Managing Director of FAIR and GSI. The participants then attended an introductory lecture providing an overview of the accelerator facilities and experiments, the research results achieved to date, and the construction of the international research center FAIR.
During the tour of the campus, the group visited the control room of the accelerator facility and the site for tumor therapy with carbon ions, as well as the large-scale experiment HADES. The marines also learned about the discovery of new elements at the SHIP experiment and inspected the construction progress of the FAIR facility from the construction site viewpoint.
The frigate Hessen belongs to the German Navy and was officially commissioned in Wilhelmshaven in 2006 as the third ship of the Sachsen class. It is the namesake ship of the federal state of Hesse. Many ships and boats in the navy have relationships with a federal state or city. In order to further deepen the friendly ties with the federal state of Hesse, the crew of the frigate is traveling around the state to learn about culturally, scientifically, and industrially outstanding institutions.
