General Program Advisory Committee (G-PAC)

The General PAC is an international program advisory committee of GSI with external members. The General PAC gives advice to the Directorate on selecting experiment proposals that are submitted by individual users or user groups in the areas of nuclear and atomic physics. Following periodic calls for proposals, the General PAC meets to evaluate those experiment proposals on the basis of scientific merit and technical feasibility and with regard to the GSI strategy, and makes recommendations on the amount of beam time to be allotted by the directorate. The G-PAC also acts as umbrella for the different sub-PACs of GSI for various research fields.

Next G-PAC Meeting

Date of the next G-PAC Meeting:June 23-25, 2020 - due to Covid-19 pandemic postponed to August 26-28, 2020!

The 'Call for Experiment Proposals for beam time in 2021/2022is open now.

The program, executed at GSI in the framework of FAIR Phase-0 FAIR, will exploit the beam conditions of the accelerator facilities of GSI, which have been upgraded to serve as FAIR injector, plus the FAIR CRYRING storage ring. FAIR-Phase-0 will also allow the use of detectors, which have been developed for FAIR.

The present ‘Call for Proposals’ offers approx. 400 shifts of beam time at UNILAC, 500 shifts at SIS18 and 400 shifts at ESR & CRYRING.

Please note, that for plasma physics experiments at SIS18 proposals are to be submitted to this call exceptionally. For proposals for the PHELIX laser or at UNILAC a dedicated 'Call' will be published on the PPAC webpage later.

The deadline of the 'Call' for experiment proposals to G-PAC has been postponed from April 30 to June 10, 2020 as the G-PAC meeting will take place in August only.

The deadline for proposals to Bio-PAC, Mat-PAC or on plasma physics experiments at SIS18 remains: April 30, 2020!

Please note that beam time granted in this call is valid only for the time indicated.

General information for Users of GSI can be found here.

Proposals are to be submitted through the 'webform Call_Proposals_2020'.

Exceptionally, this includes proposals for plasma physics experiments at SIS18 (but not for plasma physics experiments at UNILAC or PHELIX for which a dedicated 'Call' will be published on the PPAC webpage).

Selection of Program Advisory Committees (PAC) in the webform:

G-PAC: experiments in Nuclear and Atomic Physics

Mat-PAC: experiments in Materials Research

Bio-PAC: experiments in Biology / Radio-Biology

PPAC: experiments in Plasma Physics at SIS18 (w/o PHELIX or UNILAC)

Before submitting a proposal, please contact your local contact person (for your resepctive experiment, as indicated in the drop-down menu of the 'webform Call_Proposals_2020') e.g. on technical questions and on feasibility!

Please note that a proposal consists of three parts: A) the online questionnaire, B) the proposal text itself and C) a safety form.

A) Online Questionnaire: Please complete the webform Call_Proposals_2020 incl. uploading the proposal itself and the supplement from on safety aspects, and submit it.

B) The Proposal should be structured and contain the following information:

Proposal Text(max. 12 pages): Title, Spokesperson, Participants;

1. Abstract

2. Introduction (incl. references of state-of-the-art), Scientific Context and Motivation,

3. Previous experiments and Experimental Background,

4. Presentation of New Approach and Relevance to the Field,

5. Objectives and Expected Results and Accurary with Back-up in Theory,

6. Experimental Design and Methods inclusive Schematic View of Set-Up, Technical Requirements and Proposed Work-Plan,

7. Justification of beamtime request

8. 3 major publications of the spokesperson, References.

Please note: For a continuation request, a brief status report of the previous as well as an outline of the future experiment should be given.

C) Supplement Form for Safety Aspects: The safety form has to be submitted together with the proposal for beamtime. It can be downloaded from the webform Call_Proposals_2020 incl. uploading the proposal itself and the supplement from on safety aspects.

Please calculate your beamtime request according to the nominal intensities given here 'Nominal Beam Parameters for Operation 2021-22' for some ion species as examples, as they can be expected 'on-target' for the experiments.

If you need further details, please contact your GSI local contact person.

Database of granted beam time

For information on remaining shifts/proposals of approved experiments your local contact person can search a database of active proposals. Entries are updated at the end of each beam time block.
