ESA Topical Team

New Developments in Space Radiation Biology and Dosimetry
©ESA – for official use

Space radiation is recognized as a limiting factor toward Solar System exploration by human beings. A large ground-based research program in the field of space radiation biology has been implemented by NASA in recent years, and exploits a high-energy accelerator at the Brookhaven National Laboratory to simulate space radiation. Similarly, ESA acknowledges the relevance of ground-based radiation research for human space exploration and has supported a study group and an experimental activity (IBER) based at GSI in Darmstadt, Germany. With the construction of the new facility in Germany (FAIR) and consequence shortage of available beamtime for the next 2-4 years, it is important to define how to implement a ground-based research program in Europe. The relevance of the problem is especially justified by the urgent need to define a risk assessment model and science-based dose limits for European astronauts involved in long-term LEO missions or exploratory-class missions.

The present Topical Team (TT IBER) will
- survey the current accelerator facilities in Europe where investigators can perform space radiation research;
- plan future IBER activities exploiting current and future facilities;

The above objectives will be attained by:

  • Organizing ad hoc meetings, involving the TT members and scientists with specificexpertise in selected Topics of radiation biology, dosimetry, and accelerator physics.
  • Preparing documents and deliverables described in the section 3
  • Opening a webpage dedicated to the activities of the TT
  • Promoting co-ordination with other TT to attract researchers from other areas with potential interest in ground-based radiation experiments.
