Post-Doc in Proton Microscopy (all genders) – Tenure Track

GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. In the next few years, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) one of the world’s largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work together in this international environment with a team of employees committed to ensure each day to conduct world-class science.

One of the FAIR beam-driven capabilities is high-energy proton microscopy using the proton microscope called PRIOR-II. PRIOR-II is a new and worldwide unique facility, which GSI commissioned in 2021 using high-energy proton beams from the SIS-18 synchrotron. In the upcoming years, GSI expects to see a substantial development in user access request for PRIOR-II such that GSI wishes to strengthen its support activity and own scientific program.

Therefore we are offering a post-doctoral position as

Post-Doc in Proton Microscopy (all genders) – Tenure Track

Posting ID: 22.44-1700

Your Tasks:

  • contribute to the development and enhancement of the proton microscopy capabilities of GSI and FAIR at international scientific level
  • design, prepare and carry out beam time experiments at the PRIOR facility using various drivers
  • promote proton microscopy among the HED@FAIR collaboration and towards the outside by bringing new users to the facility and act as user support
  • develop an original own research profile with a sizeable scientific output (e.g. publications, education of young scientists).

Your Qualifications:

The candidate should be an experimental physicist with

  • a strong background in accelerator physics and ion optics in general
  • particularly on the subject of high-energy proton microscopy and ion beam detector development
  • an extensive practical knowledge of experimental research in the fields of high energy density and plasma physics, material sciences and biophysics with particle accelerators
  • willing to supervise students but also to provide service to user groups for performing top-grade experiments, which will exploit unique scientific capabilities of GSI and FAIR facilities
  • a first work experience, preferably in an international environment.

We offer an interesting and challenging position andan initial employment contract of 5 years with the option of a permanent employment after an internal evaluation.

The salary is based on the German civil service employees (Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst - TVöD (Bund)).
