GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. In the next few years, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) one of the world's largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work together in this international environment with a team of employees committed to ensure each day to conduct world-class science.


In the forthcoming years, the CBM (Compressed Baryonic Matter) experiment at FAIR will be developing in collaboration with the Russian experiment BM@N (Baryonic Matter at Nuclotron) simulation software and tracking algorithms for feasibility and physics performance studies. Your tasks:

  • participate in the software development for feasibility studies for Silicon Tracking Systems of the CBM and BM@N experiments
  • part of the CBM software group at GSI
  • participate in software integration
  • integrity, maintenance and further development of web-based tools for collaborative software development.


Your Qualification:

  • PhD in physics or computer science
  • a strong background in algorithm development for high-performance computing
  • good knowledge of current computer architectures
  • the ability to work in an international research team, which requires communication skills in the English language
  • we seek a person combining expertise with team-player ability, who is interested not only in algorithmic developments but also in transforming them into a running system
  • experience in large high-energy nuclear or particle physics experiments is highly desirable.


We offer a challenging position at the forefront of nowadays technology, in the context of international collaborations of altogether more than 700 members. The position is limited to a period of three years.


Salary is equivalent to that for public employees as specified in the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund).
