GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung operates a unique large-scale accelerator for ions. Researchers from around the world use this facility for experiments which, help them make fascinating discoveries concerning the building blocks of matter and the evolution of the universe. In addition, they continually develop novel applications in medicine and technology. In the coming years the new international accelerator facility FAIR, one of the largest research projects worldwide, will become available, greatly extending the scope of applications of the existing facility.

The already existing infrastructure of GSI supports the FAIR project through the FAIR phase 0 research program by providing its facilities to the international scientific community with the aim to conduct preparatory experiments for FAIR during the period of 2019-2025. In this framework, the Helmholtz Institute Jena (HIJ) and the Plasma Physics department at GSI (PPH) are in the process of establishing the facilities for the investigation of large-volume heavy-ion heated matter by volumetric measurements using laser-generated short X-ray pulses. This new technique exploits the worldwide-unique combination of an accelerator and high-energy laser. This experimental platform will be located at GSI at the output of the SIS-18 ion synchrotron und will use the high-energy laser infrastructure PHELIX of GSI as the driver source for the diagnostic X-ray radiation.


In order to support the process of establishing this research direction at GSI, we seek for a suitable candidate for the development of the diagnostics side as a

Your responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the diagnostics at the experimental cave, including the related detectors. This includes the implementation and adaptation of techniques already established in other fields (such as XANES or X-ray diffraction) on the one hand to the laser-driven X–ray source and on the other hand the novel scenario to be investigated, i.e. the volumetric characterization of heavy-ion-beam-heated matter.
  • To be in charge of the laser beamline that is being constructed with the aim to transport the PHELIX pulse into the ion experimental cave as the X-ray driver.
  • In addition to X-ray techniques the candidate should also evaluate and implement other optical diagnostic techniques, such as pyrometry or VISAR.


Your qualifications:

  • PhD and experience in experimental physics
  • basic training and hand-on experience in laser physics, laser-plasma interactions, laser-driven X-ray generation and  X-ray-based diagnostics
  • strong interest in plasma physics using heavy-ion-beam drivers
  • strong interest in working in an international environment
  • experience in organizing and leading a group for experimental campaigns, including the supervision of students
  • the willingness to provide service and support to external user groups in performing their experiments using the infrastructure of GSI

This position is initially termed for 5 years. The salary is based on the TVöD (Bund) collective agreement in force at GSI.


The place of work will be at GSI, Darmstadt.
