Link-Scientist (m/f/d) at the PHELIX facility

In the next few years, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) one of the world's largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work together in this international environment with a team of employees committed to ensure each day to conduct world-class science.

 

Since 2008, the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt is operating PHELIX, the largest laser facility in Germany, for the international scientific community. The facility is a dual front-end nanosecond and sub-picosecond laser that benefits from the world-wide unique combination of expertise in laser and heavy-ion physics located around Darmstadt. An important aspect of the success of the experimental campaigns at PHELIX relies on a close collaboration between the operation and experiment teams.

 

Therefore we are offering a post-doctoral position as

 

Link-Scientist (m/f/d) at the PHELIX facility

to act as the technical link between the operation team and the experimental groups conducting their experiments, incl. technical planning and realization of the experiment with the user groups. Depending on the schedule of the facility, the duties as link scientist will concern 3 to 4 experimental campaigns per year of about 3 weeks each. Outside this core time, the applicant (m/d/f) will be free to carry his/her/its own research in one of the fields covered by the plasma physics departments of GSI that include short-pulse laser physics, plasma diagnostics, laser-plasma interaction and laser particle acceleration.

 

Complementary to the PHELIX facility, GSI recently brought a new super-computer online where massively parallel simulations are possible to support our experimental program.
 

Qualifications and Skills:

  • a recently-completed PhD degree in experimental plasma physics or short-pulse laser physics
  • experience on short-pulse, high-energy laser development and/or high-energy laser experiments
  • a strong interest to work in an international environment and excellent team-working capability

 

New development ideas based on the candidate’s experience are also welcome if they meet the institute’s mid- to long-term development goals. In the application, the candidate (m/f/d) should describe her/his/its research interest and underline how this fits with the near term goals of the laser and plasma physics program of GSI.

We offer an initial employment contract of 2 years. Salary is equivalent to that for public employees as specified in the collective agreement for public employees (TVÖD).

 

The place of work will be at GSI, Darmstadt.
