Outstanding biophysics publication: One of the most important articles in six decades

A publication by researchers of the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg is included in the 25 most important articles of the 60-year history of the scientific journal "Physics in Medicine and Biology". The publication dating from the year 2000 was fundamental for the three-dimensional treatment planning in tumor therapy with ion beams based on of the so-called raster scan method. The article was published again in an anniversary edition on the occasion of the 60th birthday of the journal. More

The Symposium "Future Perspectives of Biophysics Research at GSI / FAIR" took place on May 30/31, 2016.

On May 30/31 the Biophysics Department hosted the symposium "Future Perspectives of Biophysics Research at GSI / FAIR". More than 100 participants discussed about the research status in the areas of radiobiology, medical applications of ion beams and space research. The broad interest in the activities of the Biophysics Department was reflected in many presentations and panel discussions with leading scientists of the field demonstrating that research at GSI ranging from molecular biology aspects to innovative therapeutic approaches is well integrated in the international research community. Many exciting ideas were exchanged providing the basis for future innovative research projects. It also became clear, how much in the past the research program of the Biophysics Department has benefited and will continue to benefit from the existing on-campus expertise in accelerator physics and detector technology.

GREWIS in the press and TV

Major public attention was paid recently to the activities of the „GREWIS“-consortium, funded by BMBF and coordinated by Prof. Claudia Fournier (GSI, Dep. of Biophysics). The GREWIS project aims at the understanding of the biological effects of radioactive Radon gas and covers two aspects: Investigation of the potential genetic risk of low radiation doses and the putative anti-inflammatory effects, including the respective mechanisms. Radon therapy is considered to have a beneficial effect for patients suffering from chronic inflammatory diseases (Rheumatoid Arthritis, Morbus Bechterew a.o.), i.e. a significant reduction of pain after longer stays in mine galleries that contain a higher concentration of Radon.

The research of GREWIS, was reported in one article of the „SPIEGEL“-magazine („Schön verstrahlt“, 17 /2016, only print version) and two TV science magazines (ZDF: „Lesch’s Kosmos“, 2016/04/05, and 3SAT: „Nano“, 2016/04/29). The TV contributions can be accessed through the media center archives ZDF/Lesch’s Kosmos and 3sat/Nano.

Symposium: Future perspectives of Biophysics Research at GSI/FAIR

On the way to find a new head of the Biophysics Department,  a symposium about „Future Perspectives of Biophysics Research at GSI/FAIR“ will be held on May 30-31, 2016, at GSI in Darmstadt.

The basic idea of this symposium is to combine presentations summarizing the current research activities of the GSI Biophysics department with presentations from external experts pointing out potential future research directions.  Sufficient time will be allotted for discussing potential expansions into new highly relevant areas of research that can be addressed by the biophysics group within their experimental facilities taking advantage of the groups expertise. A preliminary program and further information about the symposium can be found on the symposium webpage.

There is no registration fee for this symposium; however, we would like to ask all participants to register on the symposium webpage so that we can keep track of the expected number of participants.
