Stem Cell Scientists visited GSI

In November, members of the German Stem Cell Network (GSCN e.V., www.gscn.org) visited GSI as

part of a workshop about management strategies. The workshop was organized by Dr. Insa Schroeder,

Biophysics Department, who serves as a coordinator of the working group “Career Development” within

the GSCN and is responsible for the promotion and training of young scientists. In an effort to foster

further collaborations with the German stem cell research community, the participants were

also introduced to the research activities at GSI. Already in October, Prof. Andreas Trumpp, member of the

extended GSCN board, gave a talk about tumor stem cells in the series

„Wissenschaft für Alle“(www.gsi.de/presse_medien/veranstaltungen/wissenschaft_fuer_alle.htm).

Today inauguration of Ion Beam Therapy Centre in Marburg - cancer treatment with the procedure developed at GSI

28.10.2015

Marburg Ion Beam Therapy Center starts operations

On October 27, 2015 the first patients were treated at the Marburger Ion-Beam Therapy Center, which thereby started operations as scheduled. The cancer treatment with ions was developed by the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung. Within a clinical study 440 patients were treated successfully at the GSI accelerator facility from 1997 until 2008. GSI press release

The head of GSI biophysics department Professor Marco Durante was elected Vice Chair of the Steering Committee of the Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group (PTCOG). PTCOG is an international scientific community where physicists, biologists and physicians work together regarding proton and ion beam therapy.

Every year PTCOG organizes and hosts an international conference to support and improve discussion and exchange on the latest developments in particle therapy. This year the annual conference took place in San Diego and focussed on „The Modern Era of Particle Beam Therapy: Widening the Therapeutic Window for Better Patient Outcomes.“ During the event Marco Durante was elected Vice Chair of the Steering Committee of PTCOG. In this position Durante is also Associate Editor of the International Journal of Particle Therapy, the official PTCOG journal.

GREWIS project financed for another two years

The research cooperation on genetic risks and the anti-inflammatory action of ionizing radiation, GREWIS, has been prolonged by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research for another two years. In this project eight groups from the Universities of Darmstadt, Erlangen, Frankfurt and the GSI department for biophysics cooperate to study biological effects of radon exposure in therapy and environment.

Every year thousands of patients suffering from rheumatic diseases undergo radon treatment either by bathing in radon containing water or breathing air containing radon in radon galleries. The radon treatment is based on a long lasting medical experience and yields pain relieve for many patients, although the basis of the medical action is not understood on a physical, cellular and molecular level. The densely ionizing alpha particles emitted from radon and its progenies produce the largest and most efficient contribution to the totally emitted dose. Their physical and radiobiological effects in cell cultures, tissues and in patients are studied in detail by the different GREWIS members. In the framework of the patient studies genetic alterations and mutations are studied after radon exposure which represents a major contribution of the radiation burden especially in uranium containing areas.

During the last two years of research and successful collaboration in the GREWIS consortium, important results concerning the physical and biological action of radon could be obtained and cellular alterations in patient blood could be measured. With the renewed funding of more than two million euro these studies will be continued with the goal of optimizing the radon therapy and determining the risk of radon exposure with higher precision.

Dr. Rebecca Grün received the dissertation award 2015 of the German Society for Radiation Onkology e.V. (DEGRO). Rebecca Grün was awarded for her PhD thesis in the research area of tumor therapy with heavy ions. Her results contribute to an improved biological radiation planning in particle therapy by modeling the biological effect. The award is supposed to acknowledge outstanding creative achievements of individuals and especially the creativity of young researchers. The award is endowed with 1500 euro and was presented on the annual meeting of DEGRO in Hamburg in June 2015.
