Lisa Herr will be honored for her outstanding master thesis with the Philipp Siedler Award 2013 of the Physikalischer Verein Frankfurt. The award ceremony will be held on December 11, 2013.

The Christoph Schmelzer Award 2012 ceremony to Dr. Daniela Kraft from the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung and Dr. Ilaria Rinaldi from the Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg / Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München will take place on November 20, 2013 at 16:00 Uhr in KBW Lecture Hall.

The annual meeting of the Society for Biological Radiation Research will be carried out in Darmstadt from 25 to 27.09.2013 by the Department of Biology at the Technische Universität Darmstadt (Prof. Markus Löbrich) together with the Department of Biophysics of the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH (Dr. Claudia Fournier). More than 200 participants from all over Germany including a large number of young students recruited from the DFG-funded Research Training Group "Molecular and cellular responses to ionizing radiation" (TU Darmstadt, GSI, Frankfurt University) are expected. In addition to overview lectures new results on four current topics of radiobiological research will be presented and discussed.

The meeting of the Radiation Research competence network coupled with the GBS annual meeting will be held on 24.09.2013.

15th Christoph-Schmelzer-Award - Call for Nominations

The “Verein zur Förderung der Tumortherapie mit schweren Ionen” (Association for the promotion of ion therapy) accepts nominations/applications for the 15th Christoph-Schmelzer-Prize which is awarded in 2013 to outstanding dissertations related to tumor therapy with ion beams which were completed within the last two years. The prize in memory of the founder of GSI, Prof. Christoph Schmelzer, is awarded annually alternating for outstanding diploma/master works or dissertations. The award includes a certificate and a prize money of 1.500 €.

 

Applications or third-party nominations should include:

− reasons for the nomination

− short CV of the nominee

− Copy of the thesis work (pdf)

− One letter of reference

Dr. Matthias Prall got the award for the best poster presented at the Workshop on Particle Radiosurgery: A new Frontier in Physics in Medicine  in Obergurgl, Austria, for the Poster with the title: Proton Radiography of Biological Samples at LANL. The poster describes the proton radiography experiment performed in Los Alamos. Co-authors: Lang, Philipp-Michael (TUD); La Tessa, Chiara (GSI); Merrill, Frank E. Dr. Thomas Friedrich will be honored for his outstanding achievements in the field of radiation biology research with the GBS Award for Young Scientists 2013. The GBS Award for Young Scientists is donated since 2002 by Prof. Dr. Dieter Frankenberg, Göttingen.The prize is awarded by a jury of GBS to young scientists who should not be older than 38 years. This year, Dr. S. Hehlgans, University Hospital Frankfurt and Dr. Th. Friedrich, GSI will receive the GBS Award for Young Scientists (certificate and 750€ respectively). The award will be presented at the annual meeting of the GBS in Darmstadt, on September 25, 2013.

Professor Marco Durante, head of the GSI biophysics, will be honored for his outstanding contributions to the field of radiation research with the Bacq and Alexander Award . The award is conferred by the European Radiation Research Society (ERRS) once a year and consists of a medal and a certificate. Durante will receive the award at the 40th meeting of the ERRS (ERR2013) in Dublin, Ireland, on September 4, 2013, where he will also give the award lecture.

Dr. Daniela Kraft has received the LH Gray Young Investigator award for the European Radiation Research Annual Meeting in Dublin on 1-5th Sept 2013.

Professor Marco Durante, head of the GSI biophysics, receives the 2013 IBA Prize for Applied Nuclear Science and Nuclear Methods in Medicine. The prize is endowed with 5.000 Euro and is awarded by the European Physical Society (EPS). The prize is sponsored by the IBA Group.

Durante is awarded "for his outstanding and seminal contributions to research topics in the field of radiation biophysics, including work in clinical and space radiobiology, particle genetic damage and therapy, and his valuable activities in the scientific community", says the prize committee.

The prize will be presented to Durante in the framework of the 2013 International Nuclear Physics Conference in Florence, Italy, on June 7, 2013.

The Radiation Biophysics course will start on Tuesday, April 16, 2013, 17:10-18:50, in room S207/109 at TUD. The course is held by Prof. Durante and lectures will be every Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon until July. All interested students are welcome.

With beginning of this year the project website for the "Particle Irradiation Data Ensemble" (PIDE) has been launched. PIDE is a project of the modelling section of GSI biophysics group and comprises results from over 800 in-vitro cell survival experiments after both photon and ion irradiation, gathered from more than 70 publications. The data base is available for the research community from the website.

Kathrin Frey of the University Heidelberg, Sebastian Hild of the University FH Gießen Friedberg and Christopher Kurz of the University Heidelberg have received the Christoph Schmelzer Award 2012 on January 17, 2013 . They were honored for their excellent diploma or master thesis on the field of tumor therapy using ion beams.
