The research activities of the division for Atomic, Quantum and Fundamental physics focus on the study of matter (electrons, atoms and nuclei) subject to extreme electromagnetic fields as well as to electronic processes mediated by ultrafast electromagnetic interactions, exploiting the storage ring and trapping facilities of GSI and FAIR. The hierarchy of storage and trapping facilities covers a beam-energy range of more than 17 orders of magnitude for virtually all elements in any charge state up to bare uranium (all facilities are part of FAIR too).
