Pseudofunkenschalter

 

The Pseudofunkenschalter (pseudo-overturning switch) is a low-pressure gas-discharge switching system with which high voltages and currents can be switched on. Since the voltage range of a single-stage switch is limited to approximately 35 kV due to the principle, multi-stage systems are required for switching higher voltages. In the case of our kicker magnets operating at up to 80 kV, at least one three-stage switch is necessary.

A special advantage of this type of switch compared to the tried and tested Thyratron is the lower energy requirement in "stand-by" mode, since the Pseudofunkenschalter switch does not need a heated cathode.

A corresponding switch prototype has been developed for this application. In this picture you can see the prototype, which is being evacuated before it is filled with its working gas hydrogen.
