Energy-loss

The higher beam intensities at FAIR take well-established detectors like Multi-Sampling Ionization Chamber (MUSIC) devoted to precise energy-loss ΔE measurements needed for identification of the proton number of the fragments to the operation limit.

A design concept of a tilted electrode gas ionization chamber (TEGIC) with position sensitive extension has been designed and realized at TU Munich. The chamber (300x480x140 mm3), consisting of planar electrodes tilted by 60 degree with respect to the beam axis, has been tested at the FRS (March 2014) with secondary beams from uranium fission at 700 MeV/nucleon using a fully digital readout system for pile-up handling. A resolution of energy loss of ΔZ=0.64 (FWHM) has been obtained for ions in the region around Z=50.

In 2016 the MUSAMP V2 charge-sensitive pre-amplifiers designed at CEA Bruyeres-le-Chatel with two different gains were successfully tested for the Super-FRS MUSIC with a readout based on Mesytec MDPP-16 module.

In 2019 Mesytec agreed in designing the differential, fast, low noise, low power consumption 16-ch FAIR preamp board with two gains. The integration of the board on the detector was done at GSI-DTL in 2020.

Following the results, the production of the Super-FRS First of Series started, as stipulated in the FAIR-Finland in-kind contract.
