GSI as a major research centre operates a world wide unique accelerator complex. The three heavy ion accelerator UNILAC (UNIversal Linear ACclerator), SIS (SchwerIonenSynchrotron, german for heavy ion synchrotron) and ESR (Experimental Storage Ring) are used to support experiments in atomic and nuclear physics, in bio- and medicine physics, in nuclear chemistry, in plasma physics, in material science and in accelerator physics with heavy ion beams. The preparation of beam time periods and operating this accelerator facility are the core tasks of the department accelerator operations .
Due to preparation of the existing GSI accelerator facility for the requirements of the fair project, all operation in 2017 will be suspended. During this period the majority of the operating team supports the technical departments and the SIS100 magnet testing team. At this time the focus of the department lies on scheduling and tracing the shutdown work packages and establishing an adequate operations team for future beam times, incl. further training of the operators in view of coming challenges concerning the operation of the new FAIR-facility.
