Member of the German Bundestag Svenja Schulze (SPD), former Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, visited GSI and FAIR in Darmstadt together with Bijan Kaffenberger (SPD), member of the Hessian State Parliament. The main focus of the visit was on the latest developments in research and infrastructure at GSI and FAIR as well as on the measures taken in the aftermath of the recent fire incident.
The guests, including Georg Händel, research associate to Svenja Schulze, were welcomed by Dr. Katharina Stummeyer, Administrative Managing Director of GSI and FAIR, Jörg Blaurock, Technical Managing Director of GSI and FAIR, as well as Dr. Ingo Peter, Head of Public Relations, and Dr. Inti Lehmann, Head of Research Coordination Department.
The visit began with an exchange on the current situation following the fire and on measures to ensure the rapid restoration of research operations. Afterwards, Svenja Schulze and Georg Händel were given an overview of the scientific priorities and the recent progress of the FAIR project.
This was followed by a tour of selected areas of the FAIR construction site, including the main supply building with its technical infrastructure, the SIS100 accelerator tunnel and the transfer building, and the buildings of the CBM and Super-FRS experiments.
The visit concluded with a tour of the GSI facility, with stops at the high-performance computing centre Green IT Cube, the tumour therapy treatment place, and the experiment sites of HADES and R3B.
„Being able to see this globally unique mega research project and the high-tech equipment installed there with my own eyes has deeply impressed me. It is a bitter setback for Germany's research hub that the FAIR project—after major progress in recent years—is once again set back by the recent fire. I will continue to champion the project and actively support science and research," said Svenja Schulze. (LW)
