Hessian State Parliament Member Sebastian Sommer (CDU) visited GSI/FAIR together with his Head of Office, Daniel Georgi, to learn about the scientific activities and the construction progress of the international accelerator facility FAIR. The guests were welcomed by Prof. Dr. Thomas Nilsson, Scientific Managing Director of GSI and FAIR, Dr. Katharina Stummeyer, Administrative Managing Director of GSI and FAIR, Jörg Blaurock, Technical Managing Director of GSI and FAIR, as well as Dr. Ingo Peter from the Public Relations Department.

Following an introductory presentation on research, infrastructure and the current development milestones, the delegation toured the FAIR construction site, visiting major areas of the emerging facility. Key stations included the main supply building with its technical installation areas and rooftop platform, the SIS100 accelerator tunnel, central beamline distribution structures, as well as buildings for the FAIR experiments CBM, Super FRS as well as one NUSTAR experiment. A subsequent tour of the existing GSI facilities provided insights into medical research on ion-beam therapy, experiment sites such as HADES and R3B and more.

Sebastian Sommer was very impressed by the progress achieved so far and emphasized the importance of the FAIR project for the State of Hesse as a scientific hub and for the international research community. (LW)
