From space to accelerators to individual atoms – GSI/FAIR's lecture series “Wissenschaft für Alle” in the second term of 2025

28.07.2025

GSI/FAIR will continue its popular public lecture series “Wissenschaft für Alle” in a hybrid format in the second term of 2025. Interested parties can either attend the event in the lecture hall of GSI/FAIR following a registration or dial into the broadcast of the event via video conference using an internet-enabled device such as a laptop, cell phone or tablet. The program begins on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, with a lecture by Dr. Christina Will on the use of computer-aided design in the construction of the FAIR accelerator.

What exactly is a digital twin of the FAIR facility? How is a digital twin created at GSI/FAIR and which tools are needed? Using examples with comparisons between initial designs, final constructions, and scanned facility components, the first lecture of the second half of the year will provide insight into the accelerator tunnels.

Dr. Christina Will studied mechanical engineering in Chemnitz and received her doctorate from the Technical University of Darmstadt. She works at GSI since 1999 and has been entrusted with various project management tasks. In 2012, she took over as head of the department “Mechanical Integration”, and since 2024 she has been in charge of the department “Engineering”. As part of her work, she has been responsible for the digital mock-up of the facility, mechanical components, order coordination, and assembly preparations since the beginning of the FAIR planning phase.

The further lecture program covers a wide range of topics: Former ESA Director General Professor Jan Wörner looks out into space. Professor Thomas Nilsson, Scientific Director of GSI and FAIR, will remain a little more down to earth as he reports on research at the future mega-accelerator FAIR. And things will get very small indeed when Professor Christoph E. Düllmann talks about how the chemical properties of new elements can be determined from individual atoms. Last but not least, Dr. Daniel Severin, together with colleagues from research, will provide an overview of the experiments that were carried out in 2025 with the GSI/FAIR accelerator facility.

The lectures start at 2 p. m., further information about registration, access and the course of the event can be found on the event website at www.gsi.de/wfa.

The lecture series “Wissenschaft für Alle” is aimed at all persons interested in current science and research. The lectures report on research and developments at GSI and FAIR, but also on current topics from other fields of science and technology. The aim of the series is to prepare and present the scientific processes in a way that is understandable for laypersons in order to make the research accessible to a broad public. The lectures are held by GSI and FAIR staff members or by external speakers from universities and research institutes. (CP)
