Scientific Director of GSI, Horst Stöcker, dedicates himself to research again

The supervisory board of GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH granted the request of Professor Horst Stöcker to resign from his office as Scientific Director of GSI.

After 8 years as Scientific Director, Horst Stöcker is planning to intensify his research activities at GSI again. Already some time ago he had expressed his wish to resign from office, which now has been accepted by the board.

The supervisory board appointed Professor Dr. Karlheinz Langanke as Scientific Director ad interim and initiated the procedure for appointing a new Scientific Director.

The supervisory board respectfully accepted Prof. Stöcker's decision and thanked him for his commitment and successful work as Scientific Director and representative of GSI.

Horst Stöcker steered the GSI research center since 2007. During his tenure he significantly fostered close collaborations of GSI with universities and international research institutions in order to bundle know-how for research and technical development activities towards the international Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) and to promote young scientists.

GSI highly appreciates that Horst Stöcker will continue his research activities at the center. He plans to focus his scientific work on relativistic heavy-ion collisions, elementary particle physics, and the study of hot dense nuclear matter, neutron stars and black holes as well as the development of energy-efficient high performance computers. Furthermore, he has agreed to take on coordination tasks for the management board.
