02.07.2012 | Greatest Grant Notification of BMBF History for Particle Accelerator FAIR
20 hectars of building area, 35.000 tons of steel and 600.000 cubic metres of concrete – at GSI in Darmstadt one of the largests research facilities of the world is currently under construction: the international accelerator facility FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research). Parliamentary State Secretary Helge Braun presented FAIR today with the greatest grant notification for a research project in the history of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) of 526 million Euro and thus gave green light for the construction of the facility. After the completion in 2018 scientists want to explore the evolution of the universe and gain insights into the building blocks of matter with the new particle accelerator. Besides fundamental research also new medical treatments and diagnostic methods, energy-efficient high performance computers and new materials, e. g. for space travel, will be investigated.
