Does Soil of Moon and Mars Protect from Radiation? – Experiments at GSI in Cooperation with ESA
On a lunar or Mars base the astronauts must be protected from cosmic radiation. As the transport of materials is difficult, the construction of a base made from the soil of the celestial body would be an advantage. But does the soil, so called regolith, offer enough protection against radiation? In experiments in cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA) scientists of the GSI-biophysics want to find out. In the coming two years they plan to irradiate regolith from Moon and Mars with ions at GSI to simulate the cosmic radiation.
