FAIR – The Universe in the Lab
In the coming years the new international accelerator facility FAIR, one of the largest research projects worldwide, will be built at GSI. At FAIR matter that usually only exists in the depth of space will be produced in a lab for the first time. Scientists from all over the world will be able to gain new insights into the structure of matter and the evolution of the universe from the Big Bang to the present.
The future accelerator facility FAIR
FAIR will provide particle beams with unprecedented intensity and quality. Also the facility's diversity makes it unique: ions of all natural elements of the periodic table as well as antiprotons can be accelerated. At its heart is a ring facility with a circumference of of 1100 meters. A system of cooler-storage rings for effective beam cooling at high energies and various experimental halls will be connected to the facility.
