Linear Accelerator UNILAC

The linear accelerator UNILAC (Universal Linear Accelerator) is the starting point of acceleration of ions. On a length of 120 meters ions of all kinds can be accelerated up to 20 percent speed of light (60.000 km/s). The ions are used for experiments in experimental hall I, e. g. to create new heavy elements, or injected into the ring accelerator SIS18 for further acceleration.
