Professor Marco Durante, head of the GSI biophysics, receives the 2013 IBA Prize for Applied Nuclear Science and Nuclear Methods in Medicine tomorrow. The prize is endowed with 5.000 Euro and is awarded by the European Physical Society (EPS). It is sponsored by the IBA Group.

Is it possible to diagnose a tumour and treat it at the same time? This idea might become reality in the near future. In a joint experiment of GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH and the Technical University in Darmstadt (TUD) with the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), USA, researchers showed in December 2012 that beams of fast protons could do the trick. Scientists call the combination of therapy and diagnosis "theranostics".

Representatives of UK Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) now signed an official agreement for the UK to become an associate partner of the Fa-cility for Antiproton and Ion Research in Europe (FAIR), a new 1.6 bn EUR particle accelerator facility which is currently being built in Darmstadt, Germany. From the Manne-Siegbahn-Laboratory in Stockholm the first storage ring has been delivered to the future FAIR accelerator facility. Professor Hans Geissel has set a new world record at GSI by discovering 272 nuclides—specific types of atomic nuclei. He overtook his colleague Professor Gottfried Münzenberg in the world rankings with the production of 59 new nuclides. The 100,000th guest has visited the accelerator facility and the experimental sites at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung as well as the developments and the construction site of the future facility FAIR in Darmstadt. Since Friday January 4, 2013 the access road from the B3 trunk road to the construction site for the accelerator facility FAIR at GSI has been open for construction site traffic. Construction site traffic leaving the B3 north of Wixhausen is being regulated using a set of traffic lights. Access to the construction road is solely for construction site traffic.
