Since Friday January 4, 2013 the access road from the B3 trunk road to the construction site for the accelerator facility FAIR at GSI has been open for construction site traffic. Construction site traffic leaving the B3 north of Wixhausen is being regulated using a set of traffic lights. Access to the construction road is solely for construction site traffic.

GSI will build a new canteen and office building with construction costs of approximatel 7 million Euro. Financing is ensured through funds for development of the Helmholtz Association. The start of the construction works is planned for 2014. The new building became necessary due to the continuously increasing number of employees and international researchers on the campus resulting from the construction of the new accelerator facility FAIR at GSI. In an architecture competition two conceptual...

At the Centro Nazionale di Adroterapia Oncologica (CNAO), Italy's National Hadron Therapy Centre for Cancer Treatment, a first batch of patients is receiving carbon ion treatment. The CNAO, which is located in the northern Italian city of Pavia, employs a treatment method developed at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH in Darmstadt, Germany. Carbon ions are accelerated to high velocities in particle accelerators so that the particles can penetrate deep inside a patient's body,...

2012 marks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Germany and the People’s Republic of China. Dating from the end of the 1970s, there has a been a host of successful research projects involving collaboration between the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and research centres belonging to the Helmholtz Association. The latter include GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH, which has maintained scientific links with the CAS-affiliated Institute of Modern Physics (IMP) in...

For six weeks the rover „Curiosity” is now working on Mars. NASA also plans to send humans to Mars within the next 20 years. On the flight and during the stay on Moon or Mars the astronauts have to be protected against long exposure to cosmic radiation that might cause cancer. On behalf of the European Space Agency ESA the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH tests whether Moon and Mars regolith can be used to build shieldings for ground stations.

An international research team has succeeded in directly measuring the strength of shell effects in very heavy elements. The results provide information on the nuclear structure of superheavy elements, thus promising to enable drastically improved predictions concerning the location and extension of the island of stability of superheavy elements. Indeed, it is expected that such elements with "magic" numbers of protons and neutrons will profit from enhanced stability due to shell effects, which...
