GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung operates a unique large-scale accelerator for ions. Researchers from around the world use this facility for experiments which help them make fascinating discoveries concerning the building blocks of matter and the evolution of the universe. In addition, they continually develop novel applications in medicine and technology. In the coming years the new international accelerator facility FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research), one of the largest research projects worldwide, will be built at GSI.

The department “Control Systems” (ACO) presently employs about 65 hardware and software developers and is responsible for the design and implementation the control system of the existing and future FAIR accelerator facilities.

You will be working in a team of Software developers that is responsible for controls software for the accelerator complex. Your will develop control system components for the future FAIR facility (www.fair-center.eu). The task comprises requirements engineering, conceptual work and design, implementation, test and maintenance.

The position is part of the applications group within the control system department. Core activities of the applications group are the development and optimization of control room applications as well as underlying frameworks for settings management, planning and monitoring of the accelerator complex.

You will build applications for our internal customers based on existing frameworks, which are partially developed in the context of an international collaboration with the European Organization for Nuclear Research CERN (www.cern.ch). These applications will be used for the commissioning of new accelerators as well as daily operations of existing machines. One aspect is the development of generic Java FX UI components and libraries that are used in all applications.

You will be working as part of a team and contribute with your ideas to the overall concept of applications. With an independent work style you will also act as contact person for internal customers as well as colleagues. You will be supporting the commissioning and the operation of the existing machines, which includes taking part in regular on-call duty. 

You are passionate for software development as well as conceptual work and the design and development of applications for particle accelerators pose are challenge for you.

 

Required professional skills:

  • Strong knowledge and experience in object oriented development and design, the Java platform and Java environment.
  • Previous experience in modern software-development techniques and application development within the Java environment.
  • Strong knowledge in JavaFX, basic knowledge in Swing.
  • Strong writing and communication skills in German and English.
  • Experience with relational databases, light-weight Java containers (especially Spring) and basic experience with Linux are a plus.
  • Experience in requirement analysis, conceptual design and software development of operational applications for control rooms of complex technical facilities are a plus.

For a successful application you must have a successfully completed university studies attested by a degree in Master of Computer Science or comparable qualification and fulfill the required skills. However, we also welcome applications from career starters.
